Follonica has a grand tourist tradition. Since the 1960’s and with the demographic increase, Follonica has started to attract tourists. It’s natural sloping geographical position, at the centre of the gulf and opposite Elba Island guarantees a safe sea.
Follonica gives access to the sea for those coming from Arezzo and Siena. The number of inhabitants triples in summer, hosting not only tourists in hotels and campsites but also hosts holiday makers who own a second house in Follonica.
Follonica is a tourist destination that is appreciated by families, not only for the safety of its sea water and for the pinewoods, which guarantee peace and quiet and fun for the younger, but also for the tranquillity that Follonica guarantees at peak season.
Since the year 2000 and for every year after that until 2006, Follonica has won the European blue flag that certifies the high quality of the water and the coast, the efficiency of the facilities and of safety measures, and the high level of environmental education.
From 2001 to 2003, Follonica received the “3 flag” award from Legambiente. In 2004 and 2005 Follonica received the “4 flag” award from Legambiente, which classifies Follonica among the first 20 Italian tourist localities, with a score of 91.8 out of 100. |
